How to analyse a mock test so the next one is better
To analyse a mock test, spend longer on the review than you did worrying about the score: reattempt every wrong question cold, label each error as a concept gap, a silly error or time pressure, count the marks each chapter cost you, and let those two numbers — tag and marks lost — decide what you practise next week. A score you do not act on is just a number.

Do this the same day, while you still remember what you were thinking during each question. A mock analysed two days later loses most of its value.

Correct, wrong, and left blank. Separately mark the ones you got right but were not sure about — those are the questions that will go wrong next month, and they are invisible in the score.

Reattempt every wrong question, cold
No solution, no notes, no clock pressure. Some you will now solve, and those are not concept gaps. The ones you still cannot solve are the real content of this mock.

Read the solutions and fill the error log
One row per wrong or unsure question: chapter, what went wrong in one line, the tag, and the marks it cost. Check the method even where your answer was right.

Turn the log into next week
Total the marks lost per chapter and per tag. The top two chapters and the dominant tag decide what your practice looks like for the next seven days.
Why is checking your score not analysis?
Because the score tells you the size of the problem and nothing about its shape. Two students both score 180 in a JEE Main mock: one lost marks across four chapters she has never properly studied, the other knew almost everything and lost thirty marks to arithmetic in the last twenty minutes. The same number, and completely different work to do next week.
A second reason is that solutions are seductive. Reading a worked solution produces a strong feeling of understanding — the steps are all reasonable, each one follows from the last — which is exactly the feeling you will not have when the same question appears under time. That is why reattempting cold comes before reading anything.

How long should analysis take?
Longer than most students give it, and less than it sounds. Ninety minutes of structured review after a three-hour paper is a reasonable ratio. If your analysis is finished in fifteen minutes, you checked answers; you did not analyse.
What an error log row looks like
One row per question you got wrong or were unsure about. Paper or spreadsheet, it does not matter — what matters is that the same log survives across mocks so patterns can show up in it. The rows below are an illustration, not data from a real student.

Marks shown as −5 are the full swing of a careless wrong answer under +4/−1 marking: four marks not earned plus one deducted. A blank costs 0 but still costs the four marks you could have had.

What each tag should change next week
The point of tagging is that the three causes need opposite responses. Doing more theory for a silly error, or more accuracy drills for a concept gap, is why mock scores plateau.

What patterns should you look for across mocks?
One mock is an anecdote; five mocks with the same log are evidence. Three patterns are worth watching for.
A chapter that keeps appearing. If rotational motion is in your top three chapters by marks lost in three consecutive mocks, that is not bad luck. It is the single highest-value thing you can fix, and it will keep paying because the paper asks about it every year.
A tag that dominates. If more than half your lost marks are tagged silly error, your problem is not the syllabus, and another month of theory will not change your score. If most are concept gaps, the opposite is true and accuracy drills are a distraction.
Where in the paper the errors sit. Mark the time you reached each question. Errors clustered in the last half hour mean the paper is being lost earlier — usually to two or three questions you should have left. Errors spread evenly mean the chapters, not the clock, are the issue.
What about the questions you got right?
Mark the ones you were unsure about, and treat a lucky right answer as a wrong one. A guess that lands still counts as +4 today and as a concept gap tomorrow. Students who only review wrong answers keep being surprised by questions they "already knew".
How do you stop the analysis from being depressing?
By making it arithmetic instead of judgement. Marks lost per chapter is a number. The tag is a label. Neither is a verdict on you, and both point at something you can do on Monday. The students who improve fastest are usually the ones whose logs are the most boring to read.
Mock test analysis: common questions
How long should mock test analysis take?
Around ninety minutes for a three-hour paper, done the same day. Ten minutes to score and mark unsure questions, thirty to reattempt wrong ones cold, thirty to log the errors against solutions, and twenty to convert the log into next week’s practice. An analysis finished in fifteen minutes is answer-checking.
How many mocks should I take before the exam?
Enough that the format holds no surprises and each one still gets a full analysis — for most students that means one full-length mock a week, rising in the final two months. Taking three mocks a week and analysing none of them is the most common way to plateau, because the errors never get named or fixed.
My mock scores are not improving. What should I check first?
Check the tag split in your error log. If most lost marks are silly errors, more theory will not help and accuracy work will. If most are concept gaps, you need fewer mocks and more chapter practice. If they are time pressure, your order of attempt is the problem, not your knowledge.
Should I analyse the questions I got right?
Yes, the ones you were unsure about. A guess that lands scores +4 today and becomes a lost mark the next time the same idea appears. Mark them during the paper, review them with the wrong answers, and treat any right answer you cannot reproduce cold as a concept gap.
Is analysing a mock different for NEET and JEE?
The method is identical; the arithmetic differs. NEET UG has 180 questions in 180 minutes with +4/−1, so time pressure errors concentrate in the subject you attempt last, and Biology carries 90 of the 180 questions. JEE Main gives 3 hours for 75 questions, so single hard questions eat the clock instead.
What if I cannot solve a question even after the mock?
That is a concept gap, and it is useful information rather than a failure. Go back to the concept in your book or ask for a worked explanation, then do easier questions from that chapter before returning to the mock question a week later, cold. If it is still unsolvable, the chapter needs teaching, not practice.
