How the JEE Main percentile is calculated

How is the raw score worked out?
Since 2025, JEE Main Paper 1 has 75 compulsory questions — 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, each subject with 20 MCQs and 5 numerical-value questions. Every correct answer is +4 and every incorrect answer is −1, for MCQs and numericals alike. Unattempted questions score 0. So 18 right and 4 wrong in Physics is 72 − 4 = 68 marks.
What is the NTA percentile formula?
NTA does not rank raw marks. Inside each shift it calculates:
NTA percentile = 100 × (candidates in the shift with a raw score equal to or below yours) ÷ (total candidates in the shift)
The result is reported to seven decimal places. The topper of every shift gets 100, which is why percentiles from an easy shift and a hard shift can be compared. If you write both sessions, the better of your two NTA scores is used for your rank.
Why does the calculator show a band?
Before shift-wise data is out, nobody outside NTA knows how many candidates scored at or below you. So we read a marks-to-percentile curve built from published analyses of 2024 and 2025 sessions, 6 marks below and above your score. That spread stands in for the difference between shifts.
What are the limits?
- It is an estimate until NTA publishes results. Only the NTA scorecard is final.
- 2021–2024 tables don't transfer. Those papers had an optional numerical section with no negative marking.
- Category percentiles aren't separate. NTA computes one percentile across all candidates in a shift; categories matter for cutoffs, not for this number.
- Nothing is stored. Everything runs in your browser.

What to do with your JEE Main percentile
After you get your score
Score it straight from the answer key
Count right and wrong answers per subject against your recorded responses when NTA releases the provisional key. Scoring from memory tends to overstate marks.
Check it against the qualifying percentile
In 2025, General candidates needed the 93.1023262 percentile to write JEE Advanced. Compare your band with the cutoff for your category.
Look at the minus column
Every wrong answer costs five marks against getting it right. If one subject shows more than five negatives, that is the fastest percentile you can win back.
Turn it into a rank band

Questions about JEE Main percentile
How is JEE Main percentile calculated?
JEE Main percentile is calculated inside each shift as 100 × the number of candidates in that shift with a raw score equal to or below yours ÷ the total number of candidates in the shift. NTA reports it to seven decimal places. It is a relative score, so the same marks can give a different percentile in an easier or harder shift.
What percentile is 150 marks in JEE Main?
In the 2024 and 2025 JEE Main sessions, 150 marks out of 300 usually meant roughly the 98.9–99.2 percentile, which works out to an all-India rank of about 12,000–16,000. That is an approximate band from published analyses, not an NTA figure. A tougher shift pushes the same marks towards the top of the band.
Is JEE Main percentile the same as percentage?
No. A JEE Main percentage would be your marks out of 300, while the JEE Main percentile shows the share of candidates in your shift who scored at or below you. 150 marks is 50% of the paper but, in recent sessions, close to the 99th percentile, because most candidates score far lower.
Is there negative marking for numerical questions in JEE Main?
Yes. Since JEE Main 2025, all 75 questions are compulsory and numerical-value questions carry −1 for an incorrect answer, the same as MCQs. The optional section of 2021–2024, where you chose 5 of 10 numericals without negative marking, was removed. Unattempted questions still score zero.
Which session percentile is used for my JEE Main rank?
If you write both JEE Main sessions, NTA uses the better of your two NTA scores for the all-India rank. Each session percentile is calculated separately within its own shift. Writing Session 2 cannot lower your rank, but it only helps if you beat your Session 1 percentile.
Can I calculate my exact JEE Main percentile before the result?
Only if you know two numbers for your shift: how many candidates scored at or below you and how many wrote the shift. NTA does not publish those before the result, so any percentile before then — including this JEE Main percentile calculator’s band — is an estimate built from past sessions.
