What is the first stage of the science Olympiads in India?
The first stage of the science Olympiads in India is the National Standard Examination: NSEP for physics, NSEC for chemistry, NSEB for biology, NSEA for astronomy and NSEJS for juniors. IAPT conducts these papers, usually in late November. Qualifiers move to the national Olympiads such as INPhO and INChO, conducted by HBCSE early the next year.
Is RMO still the first round of the Maths Olympiad?
No. Since 2020, the first stage of the Maths Olympiad in India is IOQM, the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics, usually held in September. IOQM qualifiers write RMO, the Regional Mathematical Olympiad, and RMO qualifiers go on to INMO, then the IMO Training Camp and finally the International Mathematical Olympiad.
Who conducts NSEP and NSEC?
NSEP and NSEC are conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) as stage 1 of the Indian Olympiad programme. Stage 2 onwards — INPhO, INChO, the selection camp and pre-departure training — is run by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). Check olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in for the current cycle.
Does Olympiad preparation help with JEE Advanced?
Olympiad preparation helps with JEE Advanced because both reward multi-concept reasoning over recall. NSEP and INPhO problems train you to build a model before reaching for a formula, which is what JEE Advanced paragraph and multi-correct questions demand. The trade-off is time: Olympiad topics go beyond the JEE syllabus, so plan the overlap deliberately.
When should I start Olympiad preparation?
Most students start serious Olympiad preparation in Class 9 or 10 for NSEJS, or early in Class 11 for NSEP, NSEC and IOQM. Starting in Class 11 still works if your fundamentals are sound, because stage 1 papers draw heavily on the school syllabus. The first job is fixing weak Class 11 chapters, not collecting hard problems.
