Which institutes take part, and which rank counts
Around 125 or more institutes allot seats through JoSAA. Which rank decides your seat depends on the institute type.
| Institute type | Approx. number | Rank used | Quota |
|---|---|---|---|
| IITs | 23 | JEE Advanced rank | All India |
| NITs | 31 | JEE Main rank | 50% home state · 50% other state |
| IIITs | 26 | JEE Main rank | See the JoSAA seat matrix |
| Other GFTIs | ≈ 45 | JEE Main rank | Varies by institute |
Institute counts are approximate and change slightly each year. The seat matrix on josaa.nic.in is the final reference.
How should you fill JoSAA choices?
Fill choices in your true order of preference — the institute and branch you would most like at the top, and nothing you would refuse to join anywhere on the list. JoSAA allots you the highest choice on your list that your rank can get, so the order is the only thing that expresses what you want.
A practical way to build the list:
- Start from the official opening and closing ranks for your category and quota from the last two years on josaa.nic.in.
- Sort choices into reach, realistic and safe bands for your rank.
- Order within each band by what you actually prefer, not by what looks prestigious.
- Put the safe band at the bottom so you are not left without a seat.
Our JEE college predictor groups past closing ranks into bands to make step 2 quicker.
Does adding more choices reduce your chances of a top choice?
No. A lower choice never blocks a higher one: you are always considered for your higher choices first. More realistic choices only reduce the risk of ending up with nothing. The mistake to avoid is including a choice you would not accept — if it is allotted, you are left choosing between a seat you didn’t want and dropping out of counselling.
What is the home-state quota at NITs?
NITs reserve 50% of their seats for candidates from their home state and 50% for other states. Your home state is determined by the rules in the JoSAA business rules — commonly the state from which you passed Class 12 — so check the exact definition for 2027. For many students, the home-state NIT closes at a noticeably lower rank than other NITs.
Freeze, Float and Slide compared
After each allotment you choose one of three options. All three mean you accept the seat you have now; they differ in what happens in later rounds.
| Option | Your current seat | In later rounds | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Accepted as final | No further upgrades | This is the seat you want |
| Float | Accepted for now | Can move to a higher choice at any institute | You would move for a better institute or branch |
| Slide | Accepted for now | Can move to a higher branch at the same institute | You like the institute but want a better branch |
With Float or Slide, an upgrade replaces your current seat automatically. Read the 2027 business rules for withdrawal and exit options.
Next year’s rank is decided long before choice filling
If you are preparing for JEE 2027, a 20-minute diagnostic shows which chapters are holding your rank back.
Which documents does JoSAA verify?
JoSAA verifies documents online, so you upload scans rather than visiting a centre. The exact list for 2027 will be in the JoSAA business rules. In recent years it has included your JEE rank or score card, Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets, a photo ID, and category, EWS or PwD certificates where you claim them. Certificates must be in the format and validity period the rules ask for — a wrong-format category certificate is one of the most common reasons for a query.
Keep clear PDF scans ready before the result, and check names and dates of birth match across documents.
What is the 75% criterion in JoSAA?
For admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes through JoSAA, you need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. It is an admission condition, not a condition for writing JEE Main. IIT admission has carried a similar performance condition; confirm the 2027 wording in the JEE Advanced brochure.
What happens if you miss a JoSAA deadline?
Missing a step after allotment — document upload, query response or fee payment — can mean losing the allotted seat and dropping out of later rounds. Put every date from the 2027 schedule in your calendar the day it is published, and do not leave uploads to the final hour.
What is the CSAB special round?
CSAB special rounds are held after JoSAA ends, to fill seats at NITs and other NIT+ institutes that are still vacant. They do not cover IITs. If you missed out in JoSAA, or want another chance at an NIT+ seat, register for CSAB separately when its schedule is announced — JoSAA registration does not carry over automatically.
How many rounds does JoSAA have?
Recent JoSAA cycles ran 5–6 rounds. Seats move between rounds as candidates Float, Slide or withdraw, so closing ranks usually shift in later rounds. That is why a rank that doesn’t get a choice in round 1 can still get it later — and why Float or Slide is worth considering if your current seat isn’t your first preference.
JoSAA counselling: common questions
What is JoSAA counselling?
JoSAA counselling is the joint seat allocation process for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes — around 125 or more institutes. Candidates register once, fill a ranked list of institute and branch choices, and seats are allotted round by round using JEE Advanced ranks for IITs and JEE Main ranks for the rest.
How many rounds are there in JoSAA counselling?
Recent JoSAA counselling cycles ran 5–6 rounds of seat allotment. Seats move between rounds as candidates choose Float or Slide or withdraw, so closing ranks often change in later rounds. The number of rounds for JoSAA 2027 will be confirmed in its official schedule on josaa.nic.in.
What is the difference between Freeze, Float and Slide in JoSAA?
In JoSAA, Freeze accepts your allotted seat as final with no further upgrades. Float accepts the seat but lets you move to a higher choice at any institute in later rounds. Slide accepts the seat but only lets you move to a higher branch choice at the same institute. All three confirm the current seat.
Does filling more choices in JoSAA reduce my chances?
No. Filling more choices in JoSAA does not hurt your chances of a higher choice, because you are always considered for higher choices first. More realistic choices reduce the risk of getting no seat. Only fill choices you would genuinely accept, and order them by true preference.
Is the 75% criterion required for JoSAA?
Yes, for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA, you need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. IIT admission has carried a similar condition in recent years. Confirm the exact 2027 rule in the official JoSAA and JEE Advanced documents.
What is CSAB and how is it different from JoSAA?
CSAB special rounds are held after JoSAA counselling ends, to fill vacant seats at NITs and other NIT+ institutes. CSAB does not include IIT seats, and it needs a separate registration when its schedule is announced. It gives candidates who missed out in JoSAA another chance at an NIT+ seat.
Which rank is used for NIT admission through JoSAA?
NIT admission through JoSAA uses your JEE Main rank, not your JEE Advanced rank. NITs split seats 50% for home-state candidates and 50% for other states, and you also need the 75% Class 12 criterion or a top 20 percentile board result. IIT seats are the ones allotted on JEE Advanced rank.
