JEE Main eligibility for 2027 has no age limit: you can appear if you passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing for it in 2027. The 75% board-marks rule is not needed to write the exam — it applies only to NIT, IIIT and CFTI admission through JoSAA.

Is there an age limit for JEE Main 2027?
No. JEE Main has no upper or lower age limit. What limits you is the year you passed Class 12, not your date of birth. JEE Advanced is different: it has an age rule and a two-attempt limit, covered on the JEE Advanced eligibility page.
How many attempts do you get for JEE Main?
JEE Main is open to you for three consecutive years, starting from the year you appear for Class 12. Each year has two sessions, January and April, so the maximum is six sessions. Writing both sessions in a year counts as that one year, and NTA uses the better of your two scores for the rank list.
For example, if you appear for Class 12 in 2027, you can write JEE Main in 2027, 2028 and 2029. If you passed Class 12 in 2025, JEE Main 2027 is your last year.

What subjects must you have in Class 12?
For B.E./B.Tech admission, you need Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, plus one of:
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Biotechnology
- a technical vocational subject
Most JEE aspirants take PCM, which covers this. A student with Physics, Mathematics and Biology also meets the subject requirement, though individual institutes can set additional conditions for particular programmes — check the institute's rules on josaa.nic.in before relying on it.
Do you need a minimum percentage in Class 12 to write JEE Main?
No. There is no minimum Class 12 percentage to register for or write JEE Main. The percentage rule described below only matters when you want a seat at an NIT, IIIT or centrally funded institute.

What is the 75% criterion for JEE Main?
To be admitted to an NIT, IIIT or other centrally funded technical institute (CFTI) through JoSAA, you need at least 75% in Class 12 — or 65% if you are SC or ST — or a place in the top 20 percentile of candidates who passed Class 12 from your board that year.
It is an admission condition, not an exam condition. You can write JEE Main, get a percentile, and qualify for JEE Advanced without meeting it.
When does the top 20 percentile option help?
Boards mark differently. If your board is a strict marker, 72% might still put you in its top 20 percentile. Each year the cutoff marks for the top 20 percentile of each board are made available for JoSAA; check josaa.nic.in during counselling rather than guessing from another board's numbers.
Does the 75% rule apply to IITs?

What should you do if you might miss 75%?

Should you plan a drop year around the attempt limit?
The three-year window means a student who appears for Class 12 in 2027 can write JEE Main in 2027, 2028 and 2029. In practice, very few students use all three years, and the useful question isn't "how many attempts do I have?" but "what would a second year change?"
A drop year works when you can name what went wrong: a specific set of chapters, weak mock analysis, or board exams that swallowed January. It works badly when the plan is to repeat the same year with more hours. Remember that JEE Advanced has a stricter limit — two attempts in consecutive years — so a drop year for an IIT has less room than one aimed at NITs.
Does eligibility for JEE Main mean eligibility for JEE Advanced?
No. JEE Main is the first filter: the top 2,50,000 B.E./B.Tech qualifiers across categories can register for JEE Advanced. But JEE Advanced adds its own conditions, including a date-of-birth rule, the two-attempt limit and the year you first appeared for Class 12. Check both before deciding how many years to plan for.

What is the age limit for JEE Main 2027?
There is no age limit for JEE Main 2027. Eligibility depends on the year you passed or will appear for Class 12, not your date of birth. Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027, can write JEE Main 2027. JEE Advanced, by contrast, does have an age condition.
How many times can you attempt JEE Main?

Can I appear for JEE Main 2027 if I passed Class 12 in 2024?
No. Based on the three-consecutive-years rule NTA has applied in recent bulletins, a candidate who passed Class 12 in 2024 could write JEE Main in 2024, 2025 and 2026, so 2027 is outside the window. Confirm in the JEE Main 2027 information bulletin once it is released.
Can Class 11 students write JEE Main 2027?
No. JEE Main 2027 is open to candidates who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 or are appearing for it in 2027. A student in Class 11 during 2026–27 will appear for Class 12 in 2028, so their first JEE Main will be the 2028 exam. Class 11 is the right time to build fundamentals.
