What is the JEE Advanced cutoff, exactly?
The JEE Advanced cutoff is the minimum aggregate — plus minimum marks in each subject — you need to be included in a rank list. There is one Common Rank List (CRL) and separate category rank lists. If you fall below the qualifying marks for your category, you get no JEE Advanced rank and cannot be considered for an IIT seat through JoSAA.
Why did the cutoff fall from 109 in 2024 to 74 in 2025?
Because the cutoff tracks how students scored, and students score less on a harder paper. The qualifying line is expressed in marks, so a tougher paper pulls it down and an easier one pushes it up. That is why the percentage swung from 30.35% in 2024 to 20.56% in 2025, and why a single year’s number is a weak target.
Will the JEE Advanced 2027 cutoff be higher or lower?
Nobody can say before the papers are written, and anyone who gives you a single number is guessing. Over 2023–2025 the CRL cutoff ranged from 74 to 109 marks out of 360. A sensible plan is to aim well above the top of that range, because the cutoff only gets you a rank — it does not get you a seat.
What are the subject-wise minimum marks?
Besides the aggregate, JEE Advanced sets a minimum in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A very strong total with one weak subject can still leave you off the rank list. Is clearing the JEE Advanced cutoff enough for an IIT seat?
No. Qualifying gives you a rank; the seat depends on where that rank sits against the closing ranks for each institute, branch, category and quota in JoSAA counselling. There were around 18,000 seats across 23 IITs in 2025, so the rank you need for a particular branch can be far above the qualifying line.

How should you use past cutoffs while preparing?
Use them to set a floor, not a goal. Track your two-paper mock aggregates against the 74–109 range and check your weakest subject against the idea of a subject minimum. If one subject is consistently far behind the other two, fixing it will usually move your rank more than polishing your strongest subject.
