JEE Main marks vs percentile vs rank: what a score is actually worth
A JEE Main percentile is not a percentage of marks — it is the share of candidates in your shift who scored at or below you, calculated to seven decimal places and normalised across shifts. This table converts marks out of 300 into an approximate percentile and all-India rank, using about 14 lakh candidates.
Quick answer
- The NTA percentile is the share of candidates in your shift scoring at or below you, not a percentage of the 300 marks.
- Approximate rank = (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × candidates, with about 14 lakh unique candidates in recent years.
- Around 180–200 marks has landed near the 99.5 percentile in recent sessions, but the exact conversion moves every shift.
- The General (CRL) qualifying percentile for JEE Advanced was 93.1023262 in 2025, 93.2362181 in 2024 and 90.7788642 in 2023.
JEE Main marks vs percentile vs rank
Read across a row to see where a score usually lands. These are the same bands our rank predictor uses, so the tool and this table can never disagree.
| Marks (out of 300) | NTA percentile | All-India rank (CRL) |
|---|---|---|
| 250–300 | 99.96–100.00 | 1 – 560 |
| 220–249 | 99.87–99.96 | 600 – 1,800 |
| 200–219 | 99.75–99.86 | 1,900 – 3,500 |
| 180–199 | 99.55–99.74 | 3,600 – 6,300 |
| 160–179 | 99.25–99.53 | 6,500 – 11,000 |
| 140–159 | 98.80–99.23 | 11,000 – 17,000 |
| 120–139 | 98.00–98.76 | 17,000 – 28,000 |
| 100–119 | 96.60–97.93 | 29,000 – 48,000 |
| 80–99 | 94.00–96.49 | 49,000 – 84,000 |
| 60–79 | 89.50–93.80 | 87,000 – 1,47,000 |
| 40–59 | 80.50–89.15 | 1,52,000 – 2,73,000 |
| 20–39 | 55.00–79.55 | 2,86,000 – 6,30,000 |
| 0–19 | 8.00–52.50 | 6,65,000 – 12,88,000 |
Approximate, based on 2024–2025 published analyses. Ranks are worked out as (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × 14 lakh candidates and rounded. Not official NTA data — the real conversion moves with shift normalisation and candidate count.
How does NTA calculate the percentile?
The NTA score is a percentile, not a percentage. For your shift:
Percentile = 100 × (number of candidates in your shift who scored equal to or below you) ÷ (total candidates in that shift)
Three consequences follow, and all three surprise people every year.
It is relative, not absolute. A percentile of 99 means one per cent of your shift scored above you. It says nothing directly about how many marks you got — in a hard shift it takes fewer marks to reach the same percentile.
It is calculated per shift and then normalised. With two sessions and many shifts, NTA normalises so that candidates who sat different papers are comparable. This is why the same raw marks can produce slightly different percentiles across shifts.
It runs to seven decimal places. The qualifying percentile for JEE Advanced in 2025 was 93.1023262 for the General category, not 93.1. Those decimals separate thousands of candidates.
Our JEE Main percentile calculator does both halves of this: it converts your correct and incorrect answers into a raw score, and applies the formula exactly if you know your shift's numbers.
What percentile qualifies you for JEE Advanced?
The top 2,50,000 B.E./B.Tech candidates across categories qualify. These are the official qualifying NTA percentiles for recent years.

Put your own expected marks through it
The rank predictor gives a percentile band, an all-India rank band and a JEE Advanced check for your category — free, no sign-up.
Why did my friend get a different percentile for the same marks?
Because you sat different shifts. Each shift has its own paper and its own candidates, and the percentile is calculated inside that shift before normalisation. If your friend's shift was easier, more candidates in it scored highly, and the same raw marks sit lower in that distribution.
This is also why a marks-to-percentile table — this one included — can only ever be approximate. Between sessions the spread of marks changes, the number of candidates changes, and the difficulty changes. Our predictor deliberately reads the curve a few marks either side of your score and reports a band, because a single number would be a guess wearing a suit.
Two practical implications. First, do not plan around a precise percentile target; plan around a marks band, and keep a margin. Second, remember both sessions count and the better NTA score is used for your rank — a poor Session 1 is recoverable, and a strong Session 1 is not a reason to skip Session 2.
How do you turn a percentile into a rank?
Approximately:
Rank ≈ (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × number of candidates
With about 14 lakh unique candidates in recent years, 99 percentile works out to roughly 14,000, and 99.9 percentile to roughly 1,400. Because the multiplier is the whole candidate pool, small differences in the decimals matter enormously at the top: the gap between 99.5 and 99.9 is around 5,600 ranks.
Two cautions. The candidate count moves each year, which is why our predictor shows a range rather than a single rank for a given percentile. And your rank comes from the better of your two NTA scores across sessions, not from the marks of the paper you remember best.
Once you have a rank band, the next question is what it opens. The JEE Main cutoff page covers qualifying percentiles by category, and the college predictor turns a rank into institute tiers with the official JoSAA archives linked alongside.
Marks, percentile and rank questions
How many marks is 99 percentile in JEE Main?
In recent sessions, roughly 140–160 marks out of 300 has landed near the 99 percentile, but the conversion changes with every shift and session. Treat any marks-to-percentile figure as a band, not a target: the same score can sit either side of 99 depending on how your shift performed.
Is JEE Main percentile the same as percentage?
No. A percentage is your marks out of 300. A percentile is the share of candidates in your shift who scored at or below you, calculated to seven decimal places and normalised across shifts. Scoring 60 per cent of the marks can put you well above the 99th percentile in a hard session.
How is the JEE Main rank calculated from percentile?
Approximately: rank = (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × the number of candidates, which has been about 14 lakh in recent years. NTA uses the better of your two session scores. Because the candidate count changes each year, a percentile maps to a rank band rather than to one exact rank.
What marks do I need to qualify for JEE Advanced?
You need to be in the top 2,50,000 B.E./B.Tech candidates, which meant a General-category percentile of 93.1023262 in 2025. On our approximate curve that has corresponded to somewhere in the 70s and low 80s out of 300 in recent sessions — a band, not a threshold, and lower for reserved categories.
Does the better of my two sessions count?
Yes. JEE Main is held in January and April, and NTA uses the better of your two NTA scores to compute your rank. Sitting both sessions is almost always worth it: a weak first attempt can be replaced, and the second attempt cannot lower a rank based on your best score.
Why does the rank predictor show a range instead of a number?
Because the underlying conversion genuinely is uncertain. Shift normalisation moves the percentile for identical marks, and the candidate count changes yearly. Our predictor widens every estimate by a few marks either side and reports a band, which is an honest reading of the data rather than a flattering one.
