JEE Main chapter-wise weightage, read honestly

NTA publishes no chapter weightage for JEE Main, so every table you find — including this one — is somebody reading past papers. Ours covers papers from 2019 to 2026 and is given as ranges of questions per shift, because a 25-question subject paper cannot be predicted to the decimal.

Is there an official JEE Main chapter-wise weightage?

No, and it is worth being blunt about that before you read the tables below. NTA publishes a syllabus and a pattern — 75 questions, 25 per subject, 300 marks, +4 and −1 — and nothing about how those questions are distributed across chapters. Every weightage table on the internet, ours included, is produced by counting questions in past papers and averaging them.

That makes the numbers useful and fallible in the same breath. Useful, because the distribution is genuinely lopsided and has been for years: a handful of units turn up in nearly every shift while others appear in one paper out of three. Fallible, because each shift has only 25 questions per subject, and there are dozens of shifts across two sessions. A unit that averaged two questions can bring none to your particular paper.

So the tables that follow give ranges, not averages to one decimal place. They come from our reading of papers between 2019 and 2026, and they match the per-unit ranges on our Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subject pages, which are built from the same analysis.

How do you use weightage without wrecking your plan?

Three rules, in order of how much damage they prevent.

Order by weightage, never delete by weightage. Heavy units go first because finishing them earlier gives you more revision cycles on the marks that appear most often. That is a sequencing decision. Deleting a light unit is a different decision, and a bad one: the unit still carries four marks a question, and those questions are often easier precisely because most candidates skipped the chapter.

Weigh effort against the range, not against the top of it. "Organic chemistry, 7–9 questions" describes a block of a dozen chapters, not a weekend's work. A single heavy unit like Calculus deserves weeks; a two-question unit deserves days. Divide the questions by the hours the unit genuinely needs, and the ordering changes for several chapters.

Re-order around your own error rate. A unit that brings three questions a paper and that you already solve reliably is worth less of your remaining time than a two-question unit you get wrong half the time. This is where a generic weightage table stops being useful and your own mistake log takes over — it is the whole point of our mistake analysis: every wrong answer is tagged as a concept gap, a silly error or time pressure, and the tag decides what you practise next.

Where weightage tables mislead

They flatten shift variation. Two candidates in the same session sit different papers. One shift's Mathematics section can lean on Coordinate Geometry while another leans on Algebra, and NTA normalises across shifts with percentile scoring rather than by matching chapter distribution question for question.

They ignore question type. Since 2025, each subject has 20 MCQs and 5 numericals, all compulsory, all at +4 and −1. A unit that mostly produces numericals — Kinematics, Electrostatics, Thermodynamics — costs you more time per question than its raw count suggests, and now punishes a guess.

They imply a total that does not exist. Add the midpoints of any honest per-unit range table and you overshoot 25, because the ranges overlap. That is not an error in the table; it is what ranges do. Treat a row as "this unit usually appears" rather than as a budget line.

They are stated with far too much confidence elsewhere. If a table tells you Rotational Motion is "worth 6.7% of the paper", ask where the decimal came from. On a 25-question paper, one question is four percentage points.

Questions about JEE Main weightage

Does NTA publish JEE Main chapter-wise weightage?

No. NTA publishes the JEE Main syllabus and the exam pattern — 75 questions, 25 per subject, 300 marks, +4 and −1 — but no chapter-wise weightage. Every weightage table, including BrainStride’s, comes from counting questions in past papers, so treat all of them as ranges rather than official figures.

Which chapters have the highest weightage in JEE Main?

From our reading of papers between 2019 and 2026: Modern Physics and Electrostatics in Physics, organic chemistry taken as a block in Chemistry, and Calculus followed by Coordinate Geometry in Mathematics. Each of these appears in nearly every shift, which is why they are worth finishing to solving standard first.

Can I skip low-weightage chapters in JEE Main?

Not safely. A unit that brings one question per shift still brings four marks, and those questions are often easier because most candidates deprioritised the chapter. Use weightage to decide what to study first, not what to delete — with 25 questions per subject, one skipped unit can move you a percentile band.

How many questions come from Class 11 versus Class 12?

Both years are examinable across all three subjects, and the split moves from shift to shift, so no reliable ratio exists. Our subject pages tag every unit with its class, which is more useful than a ratio: it shows droppers and Class 12 students exactly which Class 11 units are still unfinished.

Does JEE Advanced follow the same weightage?

No. JEE Advanced has its own syllabus and a paper that changes format every year, with partial marking and multi-concept questions. Mechanics-heavy Physics and reasoning-led organic chemistry matter more there. Use the JEE Advanced hub for that pattern rather than carrying JEE Main weightage across.

Do numerical questions change how I should use weightage?

Yes. Since 2025 each subject has 5 compulsory numericals, and a wrong numerical costs −1 just like an MCQ. Units that mostly produce numericals take longer per question and punish guesses, so budget more practice time for them than their question count alone suggests.
