Committing to a long method

Why it happens

A question is solved the way it was taught in class, when substitution or elimination of options would take a third of the time.

The fix

Spend ten seconds choosing a method before starting. In a 25-question section, that choice is worth more than speed.

Substitution without changing limits

Why it happens

In a definite integral the variable changes but the limits stay, so a correct antiderivative gives a wrong number.

The fix

Write the new limits on the same line as the substitution, before integrating.

Domain checked at the end

Why it happens

Extra roots survive because the domain of the original expression is only considered once an answer appears.

The fix

Write the domain before solving, and strike out roots as they fail it.

Standard conic results on a shifted curve

Why it happens

Condition formulas memorised for the standard form are applied to a translated or rotated conic.

The fix

Shift the curve to standard form first, or derive the condition in the given frame.

Staying with a stuck question

Why it happens

Sunk cost: five minutes are already spent, so a sixth follows, and two easier questions go unattempted.

The fix

Set a per-question ceiling of roughly two minutes on the first pass, and mark the rest for a second pass.

Which JEE Main Maths chapters should I study first?

Calculus and coordinate geometry, because between them they carry roughly a third of the section in our reading of past papers, and both reward method over memory. Algebra — matrices and determinants, sequences, probability — comes next: the questions are shorter, so the marks per minute are good once the standard results are secure. Trigonometry and vectors are small but appear almost every shift, which makes them poor candidates for dropping.

How do I get faster at JEE Main Maths?

Speed in Maths is mostly method selection, not arithmetic. Two habits do the work:

  • Solve previous-year questions with a clock from the start, not after the syllabus is finished. The clock is what teaches you to abandon a long method.
  • Keep a log of the questions you abandoned and re-solve them the next day. The pattern in that log is usually one or two chapters, not a general weakness.

Which chapters are most important for JEE Main Maths?

How many questions come from calculus in JEE Main?

Calculus accounts for about five to seven of the 25 JEE Main Mathematics questions in our reading of recent papers, split between limits and differentiability, integral calculus and differential equations. It is the single largest block in the section, and definite integrals are where most avoidable marks are lost, usually to limits not changed after a substitution.

How can I finish the JEE Main Maths section in time?

Treat the first pass as a filter: give each question about two minutes, mark anything longer and move on. Most students who run out of time in JEE Main Maths lose it to two or three questions they refused to abandon, not to slow arithmetic. Practising previous-year papers with a clock from the beginning is what builds that habit.

Is JEE Main Maths harder than JEE Advanced Maths?

No. JEE Advanced Mathematics asks multi-concept questions with partial marking and no fixed pattern, so it is harder in depth. JEE Main Maths is harder in pace: 25 questions in a shared three-hour paper, with +4 and −1 marking. A student comfortable in Main still needs depth practice for Advanced.

Can I skip any chapter in JEE Main Maths?

Skipping is risky because the section samples widely: with fourteen syllabus units and 25 questions, most units appear once or twice in a shift. Even Binomial Theorem, among the lightest, shows up in most papers. Finish calculus and coordinate geometry first, then close the small units rather than dropping them.

Do I need to memorise formulas for JEE Main Maths?

You need the standard results — trigonometric identities, conic conditions, standard integrals — fast enough to recall under time, but memorising without deriving them once is what produces the common error of applying a standard-form result to a shifted curve. Learn each result with the condition it holds under, then practise until recall is automatic.
