JEE Main 2027 syllabus: what changed, and what you can safely skip

NTA had not released the JEE Main 2027 syllabus as of September 2026, so the 2026 list is the only one worth planning against. The last real cut came in 2024, when the syllabus was aligned with the rationalised NCERT books; the 2025 change was to the question paper, not the syllabus.

JEE Main syllabus and paper changes, 2024 to 2027

Two different things get called "the syllabus change" in coaching WhatsApp groups. Only one of them was a syllabus change.

Has NTA released the JEE Main 2027 syllabus?

No. As of September 2026, NTA had not published the JEE Main 2027 syllabus. It arrives inside the information bulletin, which in recent cycles has come out with registration — expected around late October to November 2026 for a Session 1 in late January 2027. Until that document exists, the 2026 syllabus is the only list worth building a plan on.

This matters because September to November is exactly when "syllabus reduced for 2027" posts circulate. They are almost always one of three things: a screenshot of the genuine 2024 revision presented as new, a coaching institute's own topic list, or somebody's guess about which rationalised NCERT chapters will go next. A syllabus change is announced by NTA in the bulletin, and nowhere else.

The safe way to handle the gap is to work on the 2026 unit list and treat any deletion you hear about as unconfirmed. Adding a topic later costs you a week. Dropping a topic that turns out to be examinable costs you the marks it carried, twice over — once in the paper, once in the panic before it.

What actually changed in the 2024 revision?

For JEE Main 2024, NTA trimmed the syllabus to match the rationalised NCERT textbooks. In Chemistry, whole units left the list — States of Matter, Hydrogen and s-Block Elements among them — and several surviving units lost topics inside them. Physics and Mathematics saw smaller edits of the same kind.

The current list runs to 20 units in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 14 in Mathematics. Our JEE Main syllabus page sets out every one of them, and the syllabus tracker lets you tick them off as you finish them.

One exception is worth knowing, because it catches students who study only from the current books. p-Block Elements is still in the JEE Main syllabus even though the rationalised NCERT Chemistry books dropped those chapters. If your textbook doesn't cover it, you need an older NCERT edition or your coaching module for that unit — the syllabus, not the textbook, decides what can be asked.

The practical rule after any revision: don't hunt for a list of deletions. Compare your own material against the unit list in the bulletin, chapter by chapter. A topic that no unit covers isn't examinable; a unit your material skips is a gap you just found.

And the 2025 change — did that reduce anything?

No. The 2025 change was to the question paper. The optional numerical section used from 2021 to 2024, where you attempted 5 of 10 numericals, was removed. Since 2025 the paper has 75 compulsory questions — 20 MCQs and 5 numericals per subject — worth 300 marks in 3 hours, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one on both question types.

That last detail changes how you should practise, even though not one topic moved. Under the old pattern a numerical you were unsure about was nearly free: you could skip it and attempt a different one. Now a guessed numerical costs a mark like any other wrong answer, and there is no menu to choose from.

So the 2025 change is really a change to your attempt strategy. Numericals have to be practised to the point of accuracy rather than acquaintance, and the decision to attempt one has to be made on whether you can finish it, not on whether you recognise it. What can you actually skip?

Officially, nothing. Every unit on the list can be asked, and in a 25-question subject paper a single unit you ignored can be the difference between two percentile bands.

The honest version of the question is about sequence, not deletion. With four or five months left and three subjects to hold together, you decide what to do first, what to do later, and what to meet only through mixed practice. Weightage helps with that ordering, as long as you remember NTA publishes none and every range you read — ours included — is somebody's reading of past papers.

Three rules keep the ordering sane:

  1. Finish the heavy units to solving standard before touching the light ones. In Physics, Modern Physics and Electrostatics repay effort fastest; in Chemistry, organic chapters together outweigh any single physical chapter; in Mathematics, Calculus and Coordinate Geometry dominate. The chapter-wise weightage analysis has the per-unit ranges.
  2. Never leave a light unit at zero. A unit that brings one question a shift still brings four marks, and those units are usually the cheapest marks in the paper because everyone deprioritises them.
  3. Judge "done" by questions, not by pages. A unit is finished when you can solve its previous-year questions under time without looking anything up.

  • Tick every unit your notes and modules genuinely cover, in the syllabus tracker or on paper.
  • Mark the units your rationalised NCERT book does not cover — p-Block Elements is the usual one — and find the older edition or module for them.
  • Flag anything in your coaching material that no unit on the list covers, and stop spending time on it.
  • Order what is left by weightage, then by how far you are from solving it under time.
  • Re-check when NTA publishes the next bulletin, because the unit list can move between cycles.

Is the JEE Main 2027 syllabus out?

No. As of September 2026, NTA had not released the JEE Main 2027 syllabus. Is the JEE Main syllabus the same as NCERT?

Closely, but not exactly. The JEE Main syllabus follows the Class 11 and 12 NCERT books and was trimmed for 2024 to match the rationalised editions. The main exception is p-Block Elements, which JEE Main still lists although the current NCERT Chemistry books dropped those chapters, so students study that unit from older editions or coaching modules.

Did the JEE Main 2025 change reduce the syllabus?

Does the JEE Advanced syllabus match JEE Main?

No. JEE Advanced has its own syllabus, published by the organising IIT, and it includes chapters JEE Main does not list — Solid State and Surface Chemistry among them. If you are preparing for both, work from the JEE Advanced syllabus page as well, because the extra chapters are where students are usually caught short.

My coaching module has topics that are not in the syllabus. Should I study them?

Not for JEE Main. Modules are often reused across years and exams, so they carry topics that left the JEE Main list in 2024 or that belong to JEE Advanced. Compare the module against the official unit list, and spend the time you save on previous-year questions from units that are still examinable.
