JEE Advanced syllabus 2027, with what goes beyond JEE Main
The JEE Advanced syllabus is set by the Joint Admission Board and published in the information brochure on jeeadv.ac.in. It covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from Class 11 and 12, and most of it overlaps with JEE Main — the real gap is in Chemistry, plus the depth every question demands.

18 chapters. The list is close to JEE Main; the brochure names specific experiments and adds X-rays under modern physics.

21 chapters. Every heading has a JEE Main counterpart, but the brochure names a few topics explicitly — harmonic progressions, logarithms, properties of triangles and the mean value theorems.

No official weightage exists, and JEE Advanced changes its question types every year. These ranges are our reading of recent papers, across both papers combined.

Is the JEE Advanced syllabus much bigger than JEE Main?
Not by much. Apart from 8 Chemistry chapters — Gaseous and liquid states, Solid state, Surface chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block elements, Isolation of metals, Environmental chemistry, Polymers — the headings match. What changes is how the chapters are examined. A JEE Main question on Rotational Motion usually tests one idea. A JEE Advanced question may combine rolling, friction and energy conservation in a single problem, then mark you partially for a multiple-correct answer.
What does partial marking change?
In recent papers, multiple-correct questions gave +4 for all correct options, +3, +2 or +1 when some correct options were chosen and no wrong one, and −2 for any wrong option. How to prepare the JEE Advanced syllabus alongside JEE Main
When should I start the Advanced-only chapters?
Early in Class 12, not after JEE Main. Solid State, Surface Chemistry and Polymers are short and mostly factual — a few focused days each. Hydrogen, s-Block Elements and Environmental Chemistry are lighter still. Gaseous and Liquid States and Isolation of Metals need more practice. Leaving all of them to the six weeks between JEE Main Session 2 and JEE Advanced squeezes the time you need for full-length papers.
Should I study separately for Main and Advanced?
No — study each chapter once, to Advanced depth, then practise JEE Main questions for speed. The reverse order does not work: a chapter learnt to JEE Main depth has to be relearnt. The exception is time. If JEE Advanced is a long shot, secure JEE Main first and add depth in your strongest subject.
Class 11 or Class 12 — which matters more for JEE Advanced?
By our chapter split, 33 chapters are Class 11, 31 are Class 12 and 8 span both years. Class 11 mechanics and physical chemistry sit underneath most multi-concept problems, which is why droppers often see their JEE Advanced scores move most after rebuilding Class 11.

Has the JEE Advanced 2027 syllabus been released?
Not as of September 2026. The JEE Advanced syllabus is published in the information brochure on jeeadv.ac.in by the organising IIT, under the Joint Admission Board. Until the 2027 brochure appears, prepare from the 2026 syllabus, and check the new brochure for any changes when it is released.
What is the difference between the JEE Main and JEE Advanced syllabus?
The JEE Main and JEE Advanced syllabi overlap for most chapters. The clear difference is Chemistry, where 8 chapters — Gaseous and liquid states, Solid state, Surface chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block elements, Isolation of metals, Environmental chemistry, Polymers — are in JEE Advanced but are not JEE Main units. The larger difference is depth: JEE Advanced questions combine several concepts and use partial marking.
Is NCERT enough for the JEE Advanced syllabus?
NCERT is enough to cover most JEE Advanced topics, especially in inorganic chemistry, but not enough to solve JEE Advanced questions. The syllabus includes chapters removed from the rationalised NCERT books, such as Solid State and Surface Chemistry, and the questions need problem-solving depth beyond textbook exercises. Use NCERT for concepts, then past JEE Advanced papers.
Is the syllabus the same for JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Yes. JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2 are both three hours long, both compulsory, and both test Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the same syllabus. Any chapter can appear in either paper. The question types and marking can differ between the two papers and change from year to year.
Which chapters carry the most weight in JEE Advanced?
There is no official JEE Advanced weightage.
