The question types you should expect
Recent JEE Advanced papers have drawn from four types of question. Not every type appears in every section, and marks per question differ by section.

The multiple-correct scheme is from recent papers. Every marking scheme for 2027 will be printed in the paper’s own instructions.
How does partial marking work in JEE Advanced?
Partial marking in JEE Advanced rewards every correct option you mark, as long as you mark no wrong one. In recent papers, a multiple-correct question gave +4 when you marked all the correct options, +3, +2 or +1 when you marked only some of them, and −2 the moment any marked option was wrong.
Take a question where options A, C and D are correct:
- Mark A, C and D → +4.
- Mark A and C → +2.
- Mark only A → +1.
- Mark A and B → −2, because B is wrong — the correct A earns nothing.
- Leave it blank → 0.
The last two lines are the whole lesson. One wrong option wipes out the credit for every right one and then takes two more marks.
Is there negative marking in every JEE Advanced section?
Not necessarily, and not at the same rate. Recent papers have used different schemes for different sections, which is why the first minutes of each paper belong to the instructions, not to question 1. Read the marking line at the top of every section before you answer anything in it.
Why does the JEE Advanced pattern change every year?
JEE Advanced is organised by one of the IITs on rotation, under the Joint Admission Board, and the organising IIT sets the paper. Recent papers have totalled 360 marks, but the number of questions, the types used and the marks per section have all moved from year to year. Treat any single past paper as practice material, not as a template for 2027.

How should you attempt a paper whose format you haven’t seen?
Start by reading the instructions for every section, not only the first one. Note which sections carry negative marking and how much, then decide your order. Most students do better starting with their strongest subject and returning to the section with the harshest penalties once they have a score on the board.
When should you leave a multiple-correct question half-marked?
Add an extra option only when you are genuinely confident. Under the recent scheme, say you are sure of two options and would get +2. Adding a third option you are unsure about can lift you to +3 or +4 if it is right — but drops you to −2 if it is wrong. Roughly, that gamble only pays when you are more than two-thirds sure. A guess at 50% loses marks on average.
How do Paper 1 and Paper 2 add up?
Your JEE Advanced rank is built from the aggregate of both papers, and there are minimum marks in each subject as well as in the total. A strong Paper 1 cannot rescue a Paper 2 you skipped: you must sit both. The qualifying marks for recent years are on our JEE Advanced cutoff page.
How should the pattern change the way you prepare?
Because types change, prepare for skills rather than formats: multi-concept problems that join two or three chapters, precise numerical answers with no options to check against, and matching questions that test whether you really know a list rather than recognise it. Practise full two-paper days, with a gap in between, at least a few times before May.

JEE Advanced has two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each lasting 3 hours and held on the same day as computer-based tests. Both papers cover Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and your JEE Advanced rank is calculated from your aggregate across the two papers, so you must sit both.
What is the total mark of JEE Advanced?
Recent JEE Advanced papers totalled 360 marks, 180 in each paper. The total is not fixed, though: the organising IIT decides the number of questions and marks per section every year. The JEE Advanced 2027 total will only be confirmed by the 2027 paper itself.
Does JEE Advanced have negative marking?
Yes, in several sections. In recent JEE Advanced papers, multiple-correct questions deducted 2 marks if any marked option was wrong, and other sections used their own schemes, sometimes with no negative marking. Read each section’s instructions before answering, because the scheme can differ between sections of the same paper.
How is partial marking calculated in JEE Advanced?
In recent JEE Advanced papers, a multiple-correct question gave +4 for marking all correct options, +3, +2 or +1 for marking only some correct options with no wrong one, 0 if unanswered, and −2 if any wrong option was marked. One wrong option cancels the credit for every correct option you chose.
Is the JEE Advanced 2027 pattern announced before the exam?
The broad structure — two compulsory 3-hour papers in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — is set out in the information brochure. The exact question types, number of questions and marks per section have only been visible in the paper instructions on exam day in recent years, which is why practising several formats matters.
Is JEE Advanced harder than JEE Main?
JEE Advanced is harder in a different way. JEE Main has a fixed format of 75 questions at +4/−1, while JEE Advanced uses multi-concept problems, changing question types and partial marking. Students who do well usually have a strong JEE Main base and have practised full two-paper JEE Advanced days before the exam.
