Mocks · JEE Main
A home-made JEE Main mock needs four things: a blueprint on the current pattern (75 questions, 25 per subject with 5 numericals each), questions from checked sources, the real three-hour clock with +4 / −1 marking, and an hour of review. Get those right and it is as useful as a paid mock for everything except the all-India rank.
Quick answer
Most home-made mocks fail before a single question is chosen, because the structure is wrong. Two mistakes are common.
The old pattern. Until 2024, each subject had 10 numericals of which you attempted 5. Since 2025, every subject has exactly 5 numericals, all compulsory, all marked +4 / −1. A 2027 mock must follow the new pattern, or it trains you to skip questions you will not be allowed to skip.
Equal chapters. One question per chapter feels fair and is unrealistic. Past papers lean heavily: in our reading of them, Coordinate Geometry and Calculus dominate Mathematics, organic chemistry as a block outweighs any single physical chapter, and Electrostatics, Current Electricity and Modern Physics recur in nearly every shift.
The quickest way to a correct blueprint is the free JEE Main mock test generator. It plans all 75 questions chapter by chapter, puts the numericals in the heaviest chapters and shows the time each subject should take.
| Subject | Questions | MCQ | Numerical | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 25 | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 25 | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Mathematics | 25 | 20 | 5 | 100 |
Whole paper: 75 questions, 300 marks, three hours, +4 correct and −1 wrong on every question. Chapter-by-chapter plans are in the mock test generator.
Fill each row of the blueprint in this order of preference:
Avoid unchecked collections and AI-written questions for a timed mock. One wrong key in a three-hour paper teaches a wrong method and costs you trust in the whole exercise. If you want a source that picks questions for you, use one whose solutions are checked — BrainStride's adaptive practice draws from a bank whose solutions teachers audit before release.
Two practical rules: never use a question you remember, and keep the difficulty mixed — roughly a third easy, half moderate and the rest hard is a reasonable target in each subject.
Spend at least an hour. Rework every wrong, skipped and guessed question without the solution first, then tag each one:
Count the tags by chapter. The two chapters with the most concept gaps go into your next week's study plan; the chapters with the most silly errors get short accuracy tests. Then build next week's mock in weak-chapter mode with those chapters marked, so they get more than their usual share. The mock analysis guide has a worked example, and our silly mistakes guide covers the most common slips.

Plan a 75-question blueprint on the 2025 pattern — 25 per subject, 5 of them numerical — with chapters weighted the way past papers lean. Fill it from recent official papers and your coaching modules, sit it for three hours in one block, score it with +4 / −1 and spend an hour reviewing every mistake by cause.
For practice and review, largely yes, if the blueprint and questions are right. What it cannot give you is an all-India rank among real candidates. Many students use a self-made mock most weeks and a test-series mock once a fortnight, and put self-made scores into a rank predictor for a rough band.
Fifteen: five in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Since 2025 all of them are compulsory and a wrong one costs a mark. Put them in the chapters that produce numerical questions most naturally — mechanics, electrostatics and current electricity, physical chemistry, and calculus or coordinate geometry.
Mixed, like the real paper: roughly a third easy, half moderate and the rest hard in each subject. A mock that is all hard questions underestimates your score and wears down confidence; one that is all easy overestimates it. Recent official papers give the best sense of the balance.
On screen if you can, because JEE Main is computer-based and reading on a screen is slower than on paper. Keep rough work on paper, as in the exam. If you only have printed papers, still sit them in one timed block and record your answers as you would on the exam screen.
Pattern from the JEE Main 2025 and 2026 information bulletins. Chapter weights are BrainStride estimates from past papers.
The free diagnostic maps your weak chapters, so your next mock can lean on them from day one.
