NEET marks vs rank: what a score is actually worth
NEET marks translate into an all-India rank band, never an exact rank, because the conversion moves every year with paper difficulty and the number of candidates. On a paper as hard as 2025 — where the topper scored 686 — roughly 600 marks sits near the low thousands and 500 near the high twenty-thousands. Use the bands below to plan, and the official result to decide.
Quick answer
- NEET UG marks convert to a rank band, not a single rank, and the conversion shifts each year with paper difficulty.
- The 2025 paper was markedly harder than 2024, so the same marks produced a better rank that year.
- Qualifying in 2025 needed 144 marks for General and EWS, 113 for OBC, SC and ST, and 127 for General-PwD.
- Qualifying is not a seat: government MBBS admission through counselling needs a far better rank than the cutoff.
NEET marks vs all-India rank (approximate bands)
These are the same bands used by the BrainStride NEET rank predictor, calibrated to a paper of 2025 difficulty and about 20.8 lakh candidates appearing. Read them as ranges; a single number here would be false precision.
| Marks (out of 720) | All-India rank band |
|---|---|
| 650–720 | 1 – 250 |
| 600–649 | 260 – 2,500 |
| 550–599 | 2,600 – 10,000 |
| 500–549 | 10,000 – 28,000 |
| 450–499 | 28,000 – 60,000 |
| 400–449 | 61,000 – 1,10,000 |
| 350–399 | 1,11,000 – 1,90,000 |
| 300–349 | 1,92,000 – 3,00,000 |
| 250–299 | 3,03,000 – 4,70,000 |
| 200–249 | 4,74,000 – 7,00,000 |
| 144–199 | 7,05,000 – 10,40,000 |
| 113–143 | 10,46,000 – 12,40,000 |

How should you read this table?
As a planning tool with error bars, not a promise. Three cautions matter.
The band is the answer. A score of 600 does not map to a rank; it maps to a range, and the range is wide at the top of the paper because a handful of marks separate thousands of candidates there. Any tool that gives you a single rank from marks is hiding that spread rather than removing it.
It is calibrated to a hard paper. The bands above assume a paper like NEET UG 2025, where the topper scored 686. If 2027 is easier, scores rise across the board and the same marks buy a worse rank.
Your category rank is a different number. Everything here is the all-India rank in the common merit list. Counselling for reserved categories works off category ranks, which are better than the all-India rank for the same marks, and no public formula converts between them.

NEET UG qualifying marks by category, 2023–2025
Qualifying means you are eligible for counselling. These are the official qualifying ranges published with each year’s result: the upper figure is the topper’s score, the lower one the cutoff for that category.
| Category | Percentile | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 50th | 720–137 | 720–164 | 686–144 |
| OBC / SC / ST | 40th | 136–107 | 163–129 | 143–113 |
| General-PwD | 45th | 136–121 | 163–146 | 143–127 |

Why did the same marks give a different rank in 2024 and 2025?
Because NEET UG is marked on raw scores with no normalisation across years. There is one paper, sat on one day, so a difficult paper pushes everybody’s marks down together — and the rank attached to any given score improves as a result.
The two most recent years show it plainly. In 2024 the General and EWS qualifying range ran from 720 down to 164, with a full-marks topper. In 2025 it ran from 686 down to 144. A student who scored 600 in each of those years did not have the same rank: on the harder 2025 paper, 600 sat further ahead of the pack.
This is why marks-to-rank tables from coaching institutes disagree with each other, and why last year’s table is a rough guide rather than an answer for next year. It is also why a percentile-based statement — "I cleared the 50th percentile" — is stable across years in a way a raw score is not.
Does the number of candidates change the rank too?
Yes, though more slowly. About 22.7 lakh candidates registered for NEET UG in 2025 and roughly 12.4 lakh qualified. More candidates at the same difficulty means more people ahead of any given score, so the rank attached to it gets worse even when the paper does not change.

What rank do you need for a government MBBS seat?
Better than the qualifying cutoff, by a wide margin. India has over 1.1 lakh MBBS seats, but roughly half of them are in private and deemed institutions at fees that change the question entirely, and government seats are split between an all-India quota and state quotas.
Two honest statements are all the public data supports. The first is that AIIMS, JIPMER and the most-chosen government colleges close in the first few thousand ranks. The second is that the rank a government seat needs in your state depends on your state, your category and that year’s paper, and it varies enough that a national number would mislead you.
For anything more specific, two sources are worth more than any blog table: the MCC allotment results for the all-India quota and deemed universities, and your state counselling authority’s closing ranks for the 85% state quota. Both publish round-wise data after every cycle.
How many marks is one rank band worth?
At the top of the paper, very few. Around 650 marks a single question can move you hundreds of ranks; around 350 marks the same question moves you by a far smaller share of the list, because the candidates are spread more thinly there. This is the practical argument for accuracy at high scores: at that end of the table the marks you already know are worth more than the chapters you have not started.
Where NEET seats actually come from
A rank only becomes a seat through counselling, and which counselling you enter decides what the rank is worth.
| Route | Who runs it | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| All India Quota (15%) | MCC | 15% of government MBBS and BDS seats, open to candidates from any state |
| Deemed and central universities | MCC | All seats in deemed universities and central institutions, plus AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC and AFMC |
| State quota (85%) | State counselling authority | 85% of government seats and private college seats in that state, usually with a domicile requirement |
MCC has run three rounds plus a stray vacancy round in recent years. Security deposits in recent cycles were ₹10,000 for General and ₹5,000 for reserved candidates on government seats, and ₹2,00,000 for deemed universities — confirm the current figures on mcc.nic.in.
NEET marks vs rank: common questions
What rank is 600 marks in NEET?
On a paper of 2025 difficulty, 600 marks in NEET UG sits in the low thousands on the all-India list, and the band widens quickly either side of it. On an easier paper the same score lands lower down, because more candidates reach it. Treat any single rank quoted for 600 marks as approximate.
How are NEET ranks decided when two students score the same marks?
NEET UG applies tie-breaking rules published with each year’s information bulletin, which in recent years have considered subject-wise performance — Biology, then Chemistry — and the number of incorrect answers, before falling back to other criteria. Check the current bulletin, since NTA has revised these rules more than once.
What were the NEET qualifying marks in 2025?
In NEET UG 2025 the qualifying range for General and EWS candidates was 686 to 144 marks at the 50th percentile, 143 to 113 for OBC, SC and ST at the 40th percentile, and 143 to 127 for General-PwD at the 45th percentile. Qualifying makes you eligible for counselling; it does not secure a seat.
Is a marks vs rank table accurate for the next year?
Only as a guide. NEET UG raw scores are not normalised across years, so the rank attached to a score moves with paper difficulty and the number of candidates. The 2025 paper was harder than 2024, which shifted the whole table. Use bands for planning and the official result for decisions.
What is the difference between all-India rank and category rank in NEET?
The all-India rank places you in the common merit list of every candidate who appeared. The category rank places you among candidates in your own category, so it is a better number for the same marks. Counselling for reserved seats uses the category rank, and no public formula converts one into the other.
How many marks should I target for a government MBBS seat?
Aim well above the qualifying cutoff, because government seats close far ahead of it. The precise target depends on your state, category and the year’s difficulty, so check MCC allotment results for the all-India quota and your state authority’s closing ranks. As a planning number, scores in the 600s put most government routes in play.
