The best physics books for JEE, and when to use each one

For most students the best physics books for JEE are NCERT for the syllabus boundary, H.C. Verma for concepts, and one problem series — D.C. Pandey or Cengage — worked end to end. Irodov belongs to a small group of JEE Advanced aspirants who already solve standard problems cleanly. The book matters far less than how many problems you finish under time.

Each of these is a well-known book with a clear job. The mistake is not picking the wrong one — it is owning five and finishing none.

Editions and publishers change; use whatever current edition your bookshop or library has. This list names books by what they do, not by any ranking.

Does the book you choose decide your physics marks?

Mostly, no. Two students with the same book routinely end up two hundred ranks apart, and the difference is almost never the paper it is printed on. It is how many problems each of them finished without looking at the solution, and whether they wrote down why they got the others wrong.

There is a simple test for whether a book is working. Open a chapter you studied a month ago and attempt five of its harder problems with a clock running. If you can, the book did its job. If you recognise the problems but cannot reproduce the steps, you read that chapter — you did not practise it, and a different book will not fix that.

So what should you actually own?

Three things: NCERT, one concept book, one problem series. For most students that is NCERT, H.C. Verma and either D.C. Pandey or Cengage. Add previous-year papers from Class 12 onwards. That is the whole shelf, and finished properly it will carry you through all 100 marks of JEE Main physics.

What order should you use them in?

A sequence that works for a student starting in Class 11. Compress it if you are already in Class 12 — the order still holds, the durations do not.

    Read the NCERT chapter for the definitions and the syllabus boundary, then work the H.C. Verma chapter for the reasoning. Do not start a problem series yet; you are building the concepts the series will drill.

    Add one problem series

    Bring in D.C. Pandey or Cengage for the chapters you have finished. From here the concept book and the problem series move together, one chapter behind school or coaching.

    Problem series as the spine, NCERT for the new chapters

    Class 12 chapters — electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, optics, modern physics — go straight into the same loop. Keep revisiting Class 11 mechanics; it does not stay learned on its own.

    Previous-year papers, chapter-wise then full

    Work past questions chapter by chapter first, so you see what the paper actually asks of each unit, then move to full papers under time. This is where most of the marks are found.

    No new books

    Revise from your own error log and the problems you already got wrong. A new book at this stage costs you the one thing you cannot buy back, which is time on your known weaknesses.

Which books change for JEE Advanced?

The concept books do not change; the problem sources do. JEE Advanced questions are usually multi-concept — one problem that needs a force balance, then energy conservation, then a limit — and the paper carries partial marking on multiple-correct questions, so half-knowledge is scored explicitly. Recent papers have awarded +4 for a fully correct multiple-correct answer, partial credit of +3, +2 or +1 when only some of the correct options are marked and no wrong one is, and −2 for any wrong option.

That marking rewards a specific skill: deciding how sure you are about each option separately. Books that give you long problems with several defensible-looking answers — Irodov, Krotov, past JEE Advanced papers — train it. Books that give you a hundred routine problems per chapter do not, however good they are for JEE Main.

One honest warning about Irodov. It was not written for this exam, its hardest problems are harder than anything JEE Advanced asks, and starting it before your standard problems are clean is the most common way strong students lose a term. If you are preparing for JEE Main alone, you can skip it entirely and lose nothing.

Do you need a separate book for numerical-value questions?

No. JEE Main has had 5 numerical-value questions per subject since 2025, and since that year a wrong numerical answer carries −1 like any wrong option. Numericals test the same physics; what they punish is arithmetic and rounding. Practise them out of the series you already own, and check the answer format rather than buying a book of them.

How good physics books get wasted

Every one of these is common, and none of them is about the book being wrong.

Collecting instead of finishing

Why it happens

Three series on the desk feels like preparation, and each new one restarts you at chapter one, where the problems are easiest and the progress feels fastest.

The fix

Pick one problem series and finish it chapter by chapter. Judge yourself on chapters completed, not books owned.

Reading solutions as if they were problems

Why it happens

Following a worked solution is pleasant and produces the feeling of understanding, without the part that actually builds it — being stuck and finding the way out.

The fix

Give every problem a genuine attempt on paper first. If you are stuck for ten minutes, read one line of the solution, close it, and continue.

Starting Irodov too early

Why it happens

It is the book strong students are told marks them out, so it gets opened in Class 11, where its difficulty reads as a personal failing.

The fix

Earn it. Open Irodov only when standard problems in that chapter are routine, and only if you are sitting JEE Advanced.

No error log

Why it happens

Without a written record, the same mistake feels like a one-off each time, so nothing is ever specifically fixed.

The fix

Keep one page per chapter: the problem, what went wrong, and whether it was a concept gap, a silly error or time pressure.

How do you work a problem book properly?

Set a clock. Give a routine problem a few minutes and a hard one about fifteen, on paper, without the solution in reach. Mark each attempt one of three ways — solved clean, solved slowly, failed — because that turns a chapter you "did" into a chapter you can measure.

When you check, check the method and not only the answer: a right answer from a wrong route is a mistake that has not happened yet. Anything you failed goes into the error log with the reason, and back onto a list to reattempt a week later, cold.

How many problems is enough?

Enough that the next paper holds no new shapes — in practice, one series' full exercise set per chapter plus every past-paper question from it. The number worth tracking is not problems attempted but problems you got wrong and later got right, because that is the only one that moves a rank.

Physics books for JEE: common questions

Is NCERT enough for JEE Main physics?

NCERT is necessary for JEE Main physics but not sufficient on its own. It fixes the syllabus boundary, the definitions and the standard statements of each law, which is what the paper is written against. It does not carry enough hard, timed practice, so pair it with one problem series and previous-year questions for every chapter.

HC Verma or DC Pandey — which is better for JEE?

They do different jobs, so the question is usually mis-framed. H.C. Verma builds the concept and tests whether you can reason from it, which suits Class 11 and early Class 12. D.C. Pandey gives the volume of graded, JEE Main-style practice you need afterwards. Most students use Verma first, then a problem series alongside it.

Is Irodov necessary for JEE?

No. Irodov is unnecessary for JEE Main and optional even for JEE Advanced. It suits students whose standard problems are already clean and who want long multi-concept reasoning. Starting it while you still drop marks on routine questions usually costs a term. Past JEE Advanced papers are a better first source of hard problems.

How many physics books should I use for JEE?

Three, plus past papers: NCERT for the syllabus, one concept book such as H.C. Verma, and one problem series such as D.C. Pandey or Cengage. Owning more books usually means finishing fewer chapters, because each new series restarts you in the easy early chapters instead of the ones costing you marks.

Which physics book is best for the last 60 days before JEE?

None that is new. In the last 60 days the highest-value material is your own error log, the problems you previously got wrong, and previous-year papers under time. A new book at that stage introduces unfamiliar notation and easy chapters, which feels productive and moves nothing on the day.

Are coaching modules enough instead of books?

For many students, yes. Good coaching modules cover the same ground as a problem series and are matched to the current pattern. The rule does not change: finish one source completely, log what you get wrong, and add previous-year papers. Problems are what build the marks, whichever cover they arrive in.
